Mama Nick's Circle Pizzeria's story began in 1962. In November, 1958, George was walking home from school one afternoon and needed something to drink. He stopped in The Circle Pizzeria then owned by Andy and Connie Psaros. Andy was going to be short staffed that weekend and asked George if he needed a job. One of his employees Bob had finally gotten a date with Francis! George thought sure; he would give it a try.
George worked at the Circle with Andy for about four years. Andy then decided he wanted a change of pace and purchased the Music Box in Waterloo. George's mother Despina really wanted to own a restaurant so she and her son George purchased the Circle Pizzeria from Andy and Connie on May 14, 1962. The original location was on the corner of E 4th street and Pine Street in downtown Waterloo. Mama Nick's was later relocated to 1934 Washington Street in 1970, due to a local grant. Waterloo obtained funding for the project, Open Spaces. The program was to clear space for East High School.
Taking a step-back, how did George and Despina come up with the name for their restaurant? Great question, a young lady stopped in the restaurant one afternoon and asked for Mama Nick. The rest is history. The family thought what a great name for a family business. Mama Nicks Circle Pizzeria!
In February of 1999, there was a fire that destroyed the pizza house. It was a complete loss and total devastation for the family, employees, and community. Staying true to fashion, George dug down deep and rebuilt the restaurant even bigger and better with the help of his son Mike and many other wonderful people. In August of 1999, they reopened after months of struggle and hard work. Thanks to our loyal customers, Mama Nick's is still open and going strong for over 60 years. We are proud to serve the same delicious fresh products and original recipes that we have perfected throughout the decades. We are pleased that George is still not only running the business, but also working every day. To make our story even sweeter, we are happy to say it remains a family business. His son Mike still helps out on the weekends and Mike’s wife Nickol is the manager.
Thank you for supporting Mama Nick's Circle Pizzeria, our family owned and operated business. Our goal remains the same, to serve The Cedar Valley the finest and freshest homemade meals possible.
